Symptoms of mesothelioma may not appear 20 to 50 years. Difficulty breathing, coughing and chest pain due to accumulation of fluid in the pleural space are often symptoms of pleural mesothelioma.
Symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma weight loss and cachexia, abdominal pain and swelling due to ascites (fluid in the abdominal cavity). Other symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma can intestinal obstruction, blood clotting impaired, anemia, and fever. If the cancer has spread beyond the mesothelium to other parts of the body, symptoms may include pain, difficulty swallowing, or swelling of the neck or face.
These symptoms may be caused by mesothelioma or by other, less severe illnesses.
Mesothelioma that affects the pleura can cause these symptoms:
* Pain in the chest wall
* The pleural effusion, or fluid around the lungs
Respiratory problems *
* Fatigue or anemia
* Wheezing, hoarseness, or cough
Blood in the sputum (fluid), cough (hemoptysis)
In severe cases, the person may have many tumor masses. Individuals may develop a pneumothorax or collapsed lung. This disease can spread to distribute or to other parts of the body.
Tumors that affect the abdominal cavity often do not produce symptoms until they are final. Symptoms include:
Abdominal pain
* Ascites, or abnormal accumulation of fluid in the abdomen
* Mass in abdomen
* Problems with intestinal function
Weight loss
In severe cases of the disease, the symptoms must be present:
* Blood clots in the veins may lead to thrombophlebitis
* The dissemination of intravascular coagulation, a disorder causing severe bleeding in many organs
* Jaundice, or yellowing of the skin and eyes
* Low blood sugar levels
* Pleural effusion
* Pulmonary embolism, or blood clots in the pulmonary arteries
* Severe ascites
